Boarding Call πŸš€

53% of your travelers book outside your approved tool. And it's not because they're ignoring policy. It's because what they need isn't there. This week: the research that flips the leakage conversation on its head β€” and why bolting AI onto a broken catalog will just automate the problem.

πŸ“Œ This week

On June 15, Trip.Biz β€” the corporate travel arm of Trip.com Group β€” released a whitepaper called The Invisible Spend in Business Travel. The headline: 53% of business travelers who book outside their company's approved booking platform say the reason is missing content β€” not policy, not price-hunting, not preference. And nearly one in three companies running a corporate online booking tool (OBT) report that 20% or more of travel spend lands outside the managed channel.

The data flips the usual framing. Most travel programs treat leakage as a behavior problem to be solved with policy enforcement. Trip.Biz's research says the OBT itself is the bottleneck: the catalog isn't deep enough, so employees do exactly what you'd expect β€” they go where the options are.

That distinction changes what you should be fixing.

Endless loop of stressed Afro-American man employee thinking about project looking at laptop screen in office while steam raising from hot cup on table.

✈️ Why It Matters for Corporate Travel

1. The perception gap is enormous. 93% of travel managers in the study believe their platforms offer complete content. But 69% also report that travelers find unavailable options elsewhere. Both figures come from the same respondents. Most programs are simultaneously confident in their tool and aware their travelers are routing around it. That contradiction is the actionable insight β€” it means the content audit hasn't been done.

2. Local ground transport is a near-total blind spot. 87% of local transport sits outside the OBT. That's the category most likely to get expensed late, lose its receipt, fall outside duty-of-care, and never appear in spend reporting. If you're trying to consolidate supplier negotiations or insurance coverage, that's the gap to close first.

3. Agentic AI on top of a broken catalog won't fix this. Vendors are rolling out AI booking agents fast β€” Sabre + BizTrip AI in January, Travelport TripServices on June 11, SAP Concur's Joule expense agents announced at Fusion. All of these read from the same content layer your humans do. If the inventory isn't in the OBT today, the agent can't book it either β€” you've added an autonomous layer on top of an incomplete catalog. The content audit comes first; the AI comes second.

🌏 What This Means for Your Travel Program

  1. Audit your OBT's content gaps before your next renewal. Pull the last 90 days of expense reports and identify trips or legs that appear in expense but not in the OBT. Each one is either a content gap, a permissions gap, or a UX problem. Categorize them. That's your content roadmap.
  2. Treat ground transport as its own problem. Don't assume the OBT will eventually absorb it. Run a parallel managed program with a ground-transport specialist (Uber for Business, Lyft Business, or a regional player) so the 87% has a managed home with reporting and duty-of-care coverage.
  3. Add a content-completeness clause to your TMC SLA. Specify the share of bookings, by category and region, that must be reachable inside the approved tool. Make it measurable and reviewable quarterly.
  4. Before piloting agentic AI booking, run a coverage test. Sample 50 real trips your travelers took last quarter. Could an AI agent β€” restricted to your OBT's content β€” have completed each one? If the answer is below 80%, defer the AI pilot and fix the catalog. Otherwise the agent just automates the gap.

πŸ“Š The Numbers

  • 53% of business travelers cite missing content as the main reason they book outside approved channels. [Source: Trip.Biz, The Invisible Spend in Business Travel, June 15, 2026]
  • Nearly one-third of companies with an OBT see 20%+ of travel spend leak outside the approved platform. [Source: Trip.Biz]
  • 93% of travel managers believe their OBT has complete content; 69% also report travelers finding unavailable options elsewhere β€” same respondents. [Source: Trip.Biz]
  • 87% of local transport sits outside the online booking tool. 91% of travel managers say incomplete trip capture hurts duty-of-care management. ~50% of organizations spend over 72 hours/year reconciling travel data. [Source: Trip.Biz]
  • Only 11% of programs report fully consistent global inventory access across regions; only 18% have fully consolidated travel reporting. APAC workaround rates: Vietnam 53%, Japan 50%, Hong Kong SAR 49%. [Source: Trip.Biz]

⚑ The Bottom Line

The next phase of corporate travel tooling will be sold to you as "agentic AI" β€” autonomous booking, autonomous rebooking, autonomous expense reconciliation. Three large vendors made announcements in the last six months along that line, and more are coming. But every one of those agents draws from the same content catalog your humans use. If 53% of your travelers can't find what they need inside the OBT today, an agent restricted to that catalog will hit the same wall β€” just faster, and without explaining itself. The unglamorous prerequisite β€” audit content, expand catalog, close the ground-transport gap, tighten reporting β€” is the work that makes the next layer worth buying. Do it this quarter, and you'll be one of the few programs ready when the AI layer actually arrives.
