🤖 Model Context Protocol (MCP) — the open standard Anthropic introduced in late 2024 — is now the hottest topic in travel tech. Business Travel News called it "managed travel's next transformation catalyst." Microsoft built Azure AI Travel Agents on it. Skift says it could let hotels and airlines bypass middlemen entirely. And Travel Code already has it.

🔌 What Is MCP (And Why Should Travel Managers Care)?

MCP is an open protocol that lets AI agents connect to external data sources and software in a structured, standardized way. Think of it as the "USB-C of AI" — one universal connector that lets any AI model talk to any travel system.

Why it matters for corporate travel:

• Booking: Instead of scraping or API-hacking, AI agents can natively query availability, fares, and policies in real time
• Distribution: Hotels and airlines can make their inventory directly readable by AI — no GDS intermediary needed
• Expense & Payment: Automated receipt matching, policy compliance checks, and reconciliation happen at the agent level

Skift (Dec 2025): "A chatbot suggesting vacation destinations is one thing. An AI agent that drills deep into travel supplier systems to find available seats and compare room prices is quite another."

• Microsoft released Azure AI Travel Agents — a flagship MCP-powered sample for building AI travel solutions, using LlamaIndex.TS for agent orchestration and MCP for structured tool interactions (June 2025)
• Business Travel News published a deep feature calling MCP "managed travel's next transformation catalyst" — predicting it will revolutionize booking, distribution, and payment (March 2026)
• Business Travel News Europe echoed the same: MCP enables AI agents to connect with external systems, enhancing distribution, booking, and payment processes (March 2026)
• TPConnects unveiled MCP integration for airline content distribution, streamlining how agencies access and compare airline inventory (April 2026)
• Skift reported that Anthropic's MCP has already seen "millions of integrations" since its November 2024 launch

The pattern is clear: every major travel tech player is betting on MCP as the connective tissue between AI and travel systems.

📍 Short term (2026):

• Expect your TMC and booking tools to announce MCP integrations
• AI-powered policy compliance and trip recommendations become real, not vaporware
• Expense management gets automated at the data layer, not just OCR layer

📍 Medium term (2027–28):

• Hotels and airlines go direct-to-AI, potentially reducing distribution costs
• Multi-agent workflows: one agent books, another monitors price drops, a third handles rebooking during disruptions
• Corporate travel policies become executable code, not PDF documents
