Uber spent 12 years watching Expedia book travel. Now it's doing it itself β and it took six months. This week we break down what Uber's hotel launch really means for corporate travel programs, why your road warriors might start booking outside policy without even thinking about it, and what to do before that becomes your problem.
π This week: Uber just became a travel platform.
Last week, at its annual Go-Get event in New York, Uber unveiled something unexpected: a full hotel booking feature built directly into its app.
Through a partnership with Expedia Group, Uber now gives US users access to more than 700,000 hotels worldwide β with Vrbo vacation rentals coming later this year. Uber One members get 20% off a rotating selection of 10,000 hotels and 10% back in Uber Credits on every booking.
CEO Dara Khosrowshahi didn't mince words: "Uber is now an app for everything, where you can go, you can get, and now you can travel."
The hotel booking feature is just one piece. Uber also launched an AI-powered voice booking tool (built on OpenAI models), a travel mode that surfaces tourist hotspots and local recommendations, a room service hub for forgotten essentials, and even an option to have coffee waiting in your Uber Black when it arrives.
But here's the detail that should catch every travel manager's attention: Uber CTO Praveen Neppalli Naga told TechCrunch the hotel booking feature went from idea to live product in months β not the year-plus it would have traditionally taken β because his engineering team used agentic AI tools like Cursor.
πΌ Why This Matters for Corporate Travel
1. The line between ride-hailing, OTA, and travel management is dissolving. Uber already has a corporate arm β Uber for Business β integrated with platforms like Deem and SAP Concur. Now add hotels to the same app where your travelers already book rides, order food, and track expenses. If Uber can own the full door-to-door trip (car β hotel β meals β activities), the traditional corporate booking tool starts to look fragmented by comparison.
2. AI speed is compressing competitive cycles. Uber's CTO said agentic AI cut their development timeline in half. A feature that would have taken 12+ months shipped in roughly six. The moats that traditional travel management platforms relied on β deep integrations, years of development β are eroding. If Uber can build hotel booking in months, what's stopping them from building policy-compliant corporate booking next quarter?
3. Traveler behavior is shifting toward single-app expectations. Your road warriors already open Uber multiple times per trip. Now they can book their hotel, call their ride, order room service, and get local recommendations β all without leaving one app. When travelers start bypassing approved booking channels because a consumer app is easier, policy compliance suffers.
π οΈ What This Means for Your Travel Program
π Don't panic β but don't ignore it. Uber's hotel booking is US-only at launch and lacks the policy controls, negotiated rates, and duty-of-care features that corporate travel requires. It's not replacing your TMC tomorrow.
π Watch the Uber for Business trajectory. If Uber connects hotel inventory to its existing corporate platform, that's when it becomes a real competitor to booking tools. Monitor their B2B announcements closely.
βοΈ Audit your booking friction. Travelers don't bypass approved channels out of spite β they do it because consumer apps are easier. If your booking tool takes 15 clicks to reserve a hotel while Uber takes three, you have a UX problem that no policy memo will fix.
π¬ Talk to your TMC about speed. If Uber can ship hotel booking in six months using AI, your travel management platform should be moving faster too. Ask your provider what they've shipped in the last year β and what's coming.
π The Numbers
- 700,000+ hotels available on Uber via Expedia Group partnership
- 20% discount for Uber One members on 10,000 rotating hotels
- 10% back in Uber Credits on all hotel bookings
- ~6 months from idea to launch (down from 12+, thanks to agentic AI)
- 12 years Khosrowshahi spent as Expedia CEO before joining Uber
β‘ The Bottom Line
Uber isn't just adding hotels β it's building a full travel platform, and it's doing it at AI speed. The consumer experience is here today. The corporate implications are coming. The travel managers who pay attention now will be the ones who aren't caught off guard when Uber shows up in their RFP pipeline.

π Coming Next Week
Hotel tech just attracted $1B in funding. AI-powered booking engines, dynamic pricing, and zero-touch check-in are arriving. We'll break down what's changing and what it means for your next hotel RFP.
